GODLY PLAY

Godly Play is a central component in the children’s Christian education program at St. John’s.  Children from 4 years through 11 years are invited to attend the weekly Sunday morning class.

Godly Play offers a creative, child-honoring way of entering into and experiencing the biblical story.  The Godly Play storyteller and children enter into parables, silence, sacred stories and sacred liturgy in order   to discover God, themselves, and the world around them.  A lesson has four components:  the story, the wondering, the response and the feast.  As time allows class sessions at St. John’s creatively attempt to include most of these components in every session.

At St. John’s the Godly Play lesson begins at the door of the classroom each Sunday at 10:10 AM, in between the 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM services.  Children are warmly greeted by the doorperson who prepares them for entrance into the classroom.  In the classroom children build a circle with the storyteller who talks quietly with them, building a community where each and every participant is warmly welcomed.  When all the children are present and ready the storyteller begins:  first with the story, then the wondering.  Class time is 45 minutes, ending at 10:55 AM, in time for the 11:00 AM service.
